This document summarizes a study of abandoned coal mines in China and was prepared by the University of Colorado, Ruby Canyon Engineering, and Camco. The study was designed to facilitate the identification and development of abandoned mine methane (AMM) projects, enhance knowledge of AMM emissions, and develop methodologies to forecast emissions. The study is based on a detailed inventory of methane emissions from abandoned coal mines in in Shanxi Province, China. In addition to providing a systematic and transparent resource to facilitate the identification and development of AMM projects, the study aimed to improve knowledge of AMM emissions and methodologies to forecast these emissions, provide a template for similar work, and enable Chinese and other national authorities to better estimate methane emissions.
