Republic of Korea  Joined GMI in 2010

Introduction

Peru joined the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in 2010 and serves on the Biogas Subcommittee.

Peru has taken steps to mitigate climate change and reduce methane emissions through multiple national strategies that address methane across all sectors. In addition to its national framework for climate action, Peru participates in international collaborations to reach global methane emissions reduction targets and deliver wide-spread climate resiliency.

Peru is currently active on the Biogas Subcommittee.

Finland is currently active on the Steering Committee and the Biogas Subcommittee.

Methane Emissions Summary

Methane emissions make up 15% of Peru’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

The agriculture sector is the largest contributor to Peru’s methane emissions at 45%, followed by the waste sector at 36%, the energy sector at 11%, and the land use and forestry sector at 8%.

Methane Commitments and Plans

Methane mitigation efforts in Peru are guided by national and international commitments and plans. Peru also engages in partnerships dedicated to addressing methane.

National

Peru has multi-sectoral strategies to achieve methane emissions reductions.
  • Peru submitted its third Biennial Update Report in June 2023, which documents the country’s methane emissions trends and the progress of methane mitigation activities across sectors.

International

Peru participates in numerous collaborative international efforts to implement activities focused on reducing methane emissions across the world.
  • Peru joined the European Union to launch the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) in 2021 at the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP26), committing to reducing global methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
  • In 2013, Peru became a partner of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), supporting activities to reduce methane and other short-lived climate pollutants.

Methane Actions

The following highlights a sampling of actions taken by Peru to address methane, organized by GMI sector.

Biogas Sector

  • The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation conducted a research project to measure enteric methane emissions produced by dairy cattle in Junín. (2018)

Oil & Gas Sector

  • With support from the UN Environment and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, Peru hosted a High-Level Workshop to Promote the Reduction of Methane Emissions in the Oil and Gas Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean. (2019)

Cross Sector

  • Ministerial Resolution No. 062-2023-MINAM affirms Peru’s commitment to the Global Methane Pledge and to reducing methane emissions with a particular focus on the agriculture, land use and forestry, and waste sectors. (2023)
  • In 2019, Lima, the capital city of Peru, became a member of the BreatheLife Network, committing to increase renewable power, reducing methane emissions from landfills and wastewater treatment plants, and establishing air quality and emissions monitoring systems.
