Dominican Republic  Joined GMI in 2009

Introduction

The Dominican Republic joined the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in 2009 and serves on the Biogas Subcommittee.

The Dominican Republic has made national and international commitments to methane emissions mitigation efforts. These measures include establishing reduction targets and participation in climate initiatives that support renewable energy, methane capture at waste management sites, and emission’s mitigation in the and land use sector. The country’s national climate framework is enhanced by the Dominican Republic’s strong international relationships and participation in global initiatives to reach climate goals.

Dominican Republic is currently active on the Biogas Subcommittee.

Finland is currently active on the Steering Committee and the Biogas Subcommittee.

Methane Emissions Summary

Although the Democratic Republic has not published methane emissions data, it is currently working with the Climate and Clean Air Coalition and other organizations to develop a national inventory of short-lived climate pollutants (including methane). The following chart represents emissions data and projections for the Dominican Republic extracted from GMI’s Methane Emissions Data dashboard. As illustrated in the chart, the biogas sector accounts for a significant percentage of all methane emissions in the Dominican Republic.

Methane Commitments and Plans

Methane mitigation efforts in the Dominican Republic are guided by federal and international commitments and plans. The Dominican Republic also engages in partnerships dedicated to addressing methane.

National

  • The Dominican Republic submitted its revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in December 2020, which sets methane emissions reductions goals and commits to a 27% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

International

The Dominican Republic is an active participant in international efforts to address methane emissions and reach global climate targets.

  • The Dominican Republic joined the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) in 2021 at the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP26), agreeing to take voluntary actions to contribute to a collective effort to reduce global methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
  • The Dominican Republic has been a partner of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) since 20212 and participates in the CCAC’s Supporting National Action Planning (SNAP) initiative to support international climate commitments, including methane emissions reductions.
  • The Dominican Republic is Co-Chair of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which supports countries to achieve their NDC goals and achieve emissions reductions goals, including methane.

Methane Actions

The following highlights a sampling of actions taken by the Dominican Republic to address methane, organized by GMI sector.

Biogas Sector

Coal Mines Sector

  • At COP28, the Dominican Republic committed to phase out coal-fueled power in a step towards increasing reliance on clean energy alternatives. (2023)

Oil & Gas Sector

  • Law 57-07 on Renewable Energy implements a regulatory framework to support renewable energy production, diversify the energy supply, and reduce dependency on fossil fuels, including through biofuels. (2007)
