 Madagascar  Joined GMI in 2024

Introduction

Madagascar joined the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in 2024 and participates in the Biogas Subcommittee.

Madagascar has taken initial steps in addressing methane and achieving climate targets. Specifically, the country has explored and initiated projects in the biogas sector. This effort, along with participation in international initiatives, demonstrate Madagascar’s commitment to addressing methane emissions and aligning its strategies with global climate goals.

Madagascar is currently active on the Biogas Subcommittee.

Finland is currently active on the Steering Committee and the Biogas Subcommittee.

Methane Emissions Summary

Madagascar has not published methane emissions data.

According to data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Global Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gas Emission Projections & Mitigation Potential: 2015-2050, methane emissions trends in 2024 reached 10.55 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MMTCO2e).

Methane Commitments and Plans

Methane mitigation efforts in Madagascar are guided by national and international commitments and plans.

National

International

Madagascar participates in international commitments and efforts to reduce methane emissions to reach global climate targets.

  • Madagascar joined the Climate and Clean Air Coalition in 2024 and has expressed interest in methane mitigation projects related to the agriculture and waste sectors.
  • Madagascar signed the Paris Agreement on climate change in April 2016, committing to measures to combat methane emissions. Specifically, the country’s NDC includes an initiative to reduce methane emissions by producing biogas from wastewater.
