 Vietnam  Joined GMI in 2007

Introduction

Vietnam joined the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in 2007.

Vietnam has taken significant steps to mitigate methane emissions, committing to a 30% reduction by 2030. Additionally, the country has also released a comprehensive methane mitigation plan and has committed to international methane initiatives, demonstrating its commitment to methane reduction.

Finland is currently active on the Steering Committee and the Biogas Subcommittee.

Methane Emissions Summary

According to Vietnam’s Action Plan on Methane Emission Reduction by 2030, published in 2022, methane emissions amounted to 113.3 of million tons CO2 equivalent in 2020. By 2030, Vietnam aims to reduce methane emissions by 30%.

Methane Commitments and Plans

Methane mitigation efforts in Vietnam are guided by national and international commitments and plans.

National

  • In 2022, Vietnam released its Action Plan on Methane Emission Reduction by 2030. The plan outlines the goal to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels. The strategy aims to reduce methane from the agriculture, waste, and energy sectors.

International

Vietnam is an active participant in international commitments and efforts to reduce methane emissions to reach global climate targets.
  • Vietnam joined the Global Methane Pledge in 2021, agreeing to take voluntary actions to contribute to a collective effort to reduce global methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
  • Vietnam has been a partner of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition since 2017, supporting activities to reduce methane and other short-lived climate pollutants.

Methane Actions

The following highlights a sampling of actions taken by Vietnam to address methane, organized by GMI sector.

Biogas Sector

  • To mitigate methane emissions from landfills, Vietnam initiated partnerships with waste treatment and construction companies to initiate projects to generate electricity from waste by collecting methane emitted from landfills. (September 2017)

Cross-Sector

  • As part of Vietnam’s Action Plan for Methane Emissions Reduction by 2030, the country outlines initiatives to reduce methane from oil and gas extraction, coal mining, and fossil fuel consumption. The government plans to implement policies to capture gas from oil extraction, invest in leak detection technology, and adopt drilling solutions for methane drainage and recovery during coal mining. (August 2022)
  • Can Tho, a large city in Vietnam, joined BreatheLife Network, a national Action Plan addressing short-lived climate pollutants. Planned projects include investments in solid waste treatment plants. (2019)
