 Jordan  Joined GMI in 2011

Introduction

Jordan joined the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in 2011.

Jordan supports a number of strategies to mitigate methane emissions and achieve national and international climate commitments. Nationally, these measures focus particularly on the waste sector, where Jordan has implemented projects and policies to improve methane capture and utilization and landfill sites. Jordan also participates in international collaboration efforts to leverage global resources and achieve climate solutions.

Finland is currently active on the Steering Committee and the Biogas Subcommittee.

Methane Emissions Summary

According to Jordan’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, published in the 2020 Biennial Report, methane emissions accounted for 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions in 2016, amounting to 4,675.49 Gg of CO2e. The majority of methane emissions originated from the waste sector (78%). The remaining 22% of methane emissions come from the agriculture, forestry, and other land use (AFOLU) sector and energy sector.

Methane Commitments and Plans

Methane mitigation efforts in Jordan are guided by national and international commitments and plans.

National

  • Jordan submitted its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in October 2021, and committed to reduce 31% of total greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, by 2030.
  • Jordan submitted its Second Biennial Update Report on climate change in December 2020. The report documents the country’s methane emission trends and methane abatement activities, including methane capture and utilization at landfills.

International

  • Jordan joined the Global Methane Pledge in 2021, agreeing to take voluntary actions to contribute to a collective effort to reduce global methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
  • Jordan has been a partner of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition since 2012, supporting activities to reduce methane and other short-lived climate pollutants.

Methane Actions

The following highlights a sampling of actions taken by Jordan to address methane, organized by GMI sector.

Biogas Sector

  • The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources supported the implementation of BioREEED, a project to promote the use of biogas as an energy source in Jordan. A biogas pilot plant was installed in southern Jordan and an online inventory was developed to share the potential value of biogas. (2015-2018)
