Cote d'Ivoire  Joined GMI in 2018

Introduction

Côte d’Ivoire joined the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in 2018 and serves on the Biogas and Oil & Gas Subcommittees.

Côte d'Ivoire has made significant progress in addressing methane emissions as part of its comprehensive climate strategies. Through national and international commitments, the country is actively working to reduce methane output by enhancing waste management, promoting sustainable agriculture, and increasing the use of biogas. Côte d'Ivoire’s National Short-Lived Climate Pollution (SLCP) Action Plan outlines ambitious mitigation goals, targeting a 34% reduction in methane emissions by 2030. These efforts, along with participation in international initiatives, demonstrate Côte d'Ivoire’s commitment to addressing methane emissions and aligning its strategies with global climate goals.

Cote d’Ivoire is currently active on the Biogas Subcommittee and the Oil & Gas Subcommittee.

Finland is currently active on the Steering Committee and the Biogas Subcommittee.

Methane Emissions Summary

According to Côte d’Ivoire’s National SLCP Action Plan, methane emissions were 514 kilotons (kt) in 2010 and are projected to rise steadily across several sectors through 2040, with agriculture, waste, and oil and natural gas exploitation contributing significantly to the increase.

Methane Commitments and Plans

Methane mitigation efforts in Côte d’Ivoire are guided by national and international commitments and plans.

National

Côte d’Ivoire has outlined strategies and commitments to address methane emissions at the national level. The following plans and strategies highlight the country's investments in methane action and support for sustainable development across various sectors.
  • Côte d’Ivoire’s SLCP Action Plan, released in 2019, outlines 16 mitigation initiatives with the goal of reducing 34% of methane emissions by 2030. Specific methane mitigation measures include increasing the use of biogas, improving sustainable agriculture practices, and enhancing waste and landfill management.
  • Côte d’Ivoire’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), published in March 2022, establishes the goal of reducing methane emissions by 30% by 2030 and continuing reduction efforts thereafter.

International

Côte d’Ivoire is an active participant in international commitments and efforts to reduce methane emissions to reach global climate targets.
  • Côte d’Ivoire joined the European Union to launch the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) in 2021 at the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP26), committing to reducing global methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
  • Côte d’Ivoire signed the Paris Agreement on climate change in April 2016, committing to significant measures to combat methane emissions. Specifically, the country’s NDCs aims to achieve a 30% reduction in methane emissions by 2030.
  • Côte d’Ivoire has been a partner of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition since 2013, supporting activities to reduce methane and other short-lived climate pollutants.

Methane Actions

The following highlights a sampling of actions taken by Côte d’Ivoire to address methane, organized by GMI sector.

Biogas Sector

  • Côte d'Ivoire developed an agriculture program to improve livestock sustainability techniques and livestock waste management, as part of its broader National SLCP Action Plan. (April 2023)
  • Within the framework of the National SLCP Action Plan, Côte d’Ivoire outlines the initiative to promote the use of biogas as cooking fuels to enhance the use of sustainable energy sources and mitigate methane emissions. (2019)
  • As the largest city in Côte d’Ivoire, the District of Abidjan generates significant amounts of waste annually. In 2013, the city launched a waste management initiative aimed at improving waste handling and reducing methane emissions. The initiative focuses on strengthening legislation for short-lived climate pollutants, enhancing technical capabilities to monitor emissions, and implementing other key measures to reduce methane output. (2013)

Oil & Gas Sector

  • To promote gas recovery and reduce leaks, Côte d’Ivoire, as part of their SLCP Action Plan, is working to strengthen regulatory frameworks and capacity to address methane emissions both from venting and unintentional leaks. (2019)
