Montenegro joined the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in 2023 and serves on the Biogas Subcommittee.
Montenegro is actively working to reduce methane emissions by enhancing waste management, promoting sustainable agriculture, and increasing the use of biogas. These efforts, along with participation in international initiatives, demonstrate Montenegro’s commitment to addressing methane emissions and aligning its strategies with global climate goals.

According to the Montenegro Third National Communication on Climate Change, submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) and published in 2020, methane emissions accounted for a significant amount of Montenegro's total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Most of Montenegro’s GHG emissions come from the agriculture, energy, and waste sectors.
