This guidance aims to assist mine operators, developers of gas resources, government regulators, oil & gas licensing authorities, redevelopment agencies and policymakers to take into account methane resources by identifying and increasing awareness of potential hazards associated with the continuing release of methane after mine closure and abandonment. Important co-benefits of AMM extraction and use are significantly reducing the risk of uncontrolled emissions at the surface, exploiting an otherwise wasted gas resource and mitigating GHG emissions. AMM extraction and use projects also help meet the United Nations sustainable development goals of affordable and clean energy, and climate action.
