This study assesses methane fluxes from abandoned oil and gas wells in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States. The study collected direct measurements of methane fluxes from wells using static flux chambers. A review of the collected measurements indicate that methane emissions from abandoned oil and gas wells can be significant and that further research is needed in order to quantify these emissions nationally so that they can be captured in greenhouse gas emissions inventories.
