18th Session of the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition

20–21 March 2023, Geneva, Switzerland

At its 18th session the Group of Experts will continue its work to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from coal mines through activities that help the recovery and use of methane in order to reduce the risks of explosions in coal mines, mitigate climate change, and support sustainable development. The Group of Experts will also discuss the best strategies for preparing and delivering green transformation of the coal mining regions in accordance with the principles of just transition.


The Group of Experts will then work on its Work Plan for 2024-2025, listen to presentations on relevant activities of its key partners operating in the field of monitoring and abatement of methane emissions from the coal sector, and will plan its 2024 session, exploring opportunities for delivering it within the framework of the Global Methane Forum that it could help to organize in Geneva. The end of the session will feature the thirteenth joint meeting of the Group of Experts and the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) Coal Subcommittee, which will be continued on Wednesday, 22 March in room XXV and virtually (please note that online connection will be available on Wednesday only).

GMI Coal Mines Subcommittee Meeting, 21-22 March 2023

21–22 March 2023, Geneva, Switzerland

The 32nd Coal Mines Subcommittee meeting will be held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland in conjunction with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) 18th Session of the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition. The Coal Mines Subcommittee Meeting will take place over two days:
  • In-person only on Tuesday, 21 March 2023
  • Hybrid (in-person and online) on Wednesday, 22 March 2023
The in-person meeting on 21 March will feature a keynote address, summary of the Coal Joint Technical Sessions that took place during the 2022 Global Methane Climate and Clean Air Forum in Washington, DC, and GMI Secretariat news. The hybrid meeting on 22 March will build on the productive brainstorming session about challenges for methane mitigation projects in the coal mining sector that was conducted during the Forum. There is no registration fee for this event.

GMI Oil & Gas Subcommittee Meeting, 22 March 2023

The GMI Oil & Gas Subcommittee meeting will be held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland in conjunction with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) 10th Session of the Group of Experts on Gas. There is no registration fee for this event.

10th Session of the Group of Experts on Gas

23–24 March 2023, Geneva, Switzerland

The Group of Experts on Gas helps UNECE member States deliver on key political commitments, such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. This event will take place in Geneva, Switzerland from 23-24 March 2023.

RNG Forum 2023

4–6 April 2023, Drummondville, Canada

The RNG Forum is the first event entirely dedicated to the renewable natural gas (RNG) industry in Canada. The RNG Forum 2023 focuses primarily on RNG and will gather farmers, municipalities, organic material generators, government representatives and other stakeholders from the industry. The event will be held from April 4 to 6, 2023 at the Centrexpo Cogeco in Drummondville (QC), Canada.

Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) is hosting the 2023 Methane Leadership Summit from 26-27 April 2023, at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta. This 2-day event will continue the momentum generated from the annual methane forum launched in 2018 and will bring together a multitude of stakeholder groups operating within the oil and gas industry, including government organizations, regulatory bodies, oil and gas producing companies, service and supply companies, research centers, and academic institutions, and will focus on the significant challenges facing the Canadian oil and gas industry related to methane emissions reductions targets.
