Special Landfill Sector Site Visit Information

Attendees of the Partnership Expo interested in the landfill sector had a special opportunity on 2 March 2010 to visit the Okhla landfill located in Delhi. The landfill is owned and operated by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The landfill started operations in 1996 and the current area for disposal of waste is about 17 hectares. The cumulative waste received at the landfill is 6.1 million tons and the current daily waste disposal is 1,200 tons per day.

The landfill is an uncontrolled dumpsite with no infrastructure for methane recovery. However, proper closure of the Okhla landfill and the potential for methane recovery have been examined by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the World Bank.
