Impacto Energia S.A.: Reducing Methane Emissions by Producing Biomethane

Impacto Energia S.A., an energy company based in Brazil, is working towards developing a number of methane mitigation projects across various areas. These projects include:

  • Reducing landfill methane through renewable energy cogeneration with a goal to produce 10 million cubic meters (m3) per year of biomethane
  • The company is committed to the RenovaBio program, Brazil’s “National Biofuels Policy,” which sets annual carbon intensity reduction targets, certifies biofuels by efficiency in reducing emissions, and employs decarbonization credits (CBIOs).
  • Diverting methane from landfills using biodigestion to produce approximately 36 million m3 of biomethane per year
  • Reducing emissions from industrial effluents to produce an estimated 100 million m3 of biomethane per year
  • Evaluating reducing emissions from sewage and producing methane for use in transportation

Through its work, Impacto anticipates bringing up to 100,000 MWh annually or 100,000 international renewable energy certificates (I-RECs) to the grid. The I-REC unit represents one MWh of electricity produced from renewable energy sources added to the grid.

Impacto is working to implement a gas collection field and install power generating equipment at a landfill. The company will begin commercial operations in April 2020 and expects to mitigate up to 90,000 tons of CO2e annually. Partners for this project include AB Energy SPA and ENESA.

Impacto, in partnership with ENESA, will also implement a gas collection field and upgrade biogas to biomethane for transport use. It plans to begin operations in January 2021 and expects to mitigate up to 60,000 tons CO2e annually.
