2009 EPA M2M Grant: Building from Lessons Learned to Promote Anaerobic Digestion: Technology for Manure Management in Mexico
This project has two components. The first is to translate applicable elements of the AgSTAR Programs Web site into Spanish to provide useful information to the Americas related to anaerobic digesters and methane reduction. The second is to develop 70 feasibility studies for medium and large scale farms in Mexico.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Capacity Building for Methane Recovery from Agro-industries
Under this grant, the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development will host a series of workshops to educate policy makers, facility owners, environmental organizations and other stakeholders on the benefits of anaerobic digesters for the treatment of livestock and agro-industrial waste in relation to developing renewable energy and reducing GHG’s from this sector.

This procurement assistance for 3 engine generator sets at pig farms will expand the number of participating farms in the Livestock Waste Management in East Asia Project and act as commercial scale demonstration sites for replication. The generators will inhibit gas emissions and produce energy.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Coal Mine Methane (CMM) Recovery and Utilization Initiative In Guizhou Province, China
This proposed project builds on the progress generated by the Guizhou Coal Mine Methane (CMM) Recovery and Utilization Initiative. In addition to continuing information outreach services about CMM recovery and utilization developments in Guizhou, the project will lead a publishable prefeasibility study for two candidate coal mines (1 million tons/year and 300,000 tons/year) of utilization alternatives to power generation. The study will explore the potential for CMM utilized as town gas for a sizable city and CMM-to-LNG/CNG (liquid natural gas/compressed natural gas) to replace fuels for buses and taxis in Guizhou Province.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Coalbed and coalmine methane recovery project analysis: creation of a Shanxi Province knowledge clearinghouse and recommendations
This project will analyze the efficiency of existing coalbed methane (CBM) and coal mine methane (CMM) recovery projects in Shanxi Province and develop a series of recommendations to enhance CBM/CMM recovery and reduce emissions in its mines. The University will also promote the recovery and utilization of methane in China by serving as a central repository for CBM/CMM information in Shanxi Province, and will conduct CO2 sequestration modeling.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Colombian landfill prefeasability guidebook development and bidding process assistance
Under this assistance agreement, the Colombian Center for Cleaner Production will develop a guidebook for landfills on how to conduct a pre-feasibility study (PFS) and how to undergo the bidding process for a landfill gas energy project, assist one landfill in completing a bidding process, and conduct a national training workshop for landfills and municipalities on PFS studies and the bidding process.

This project will develop a feasibility study for a communal anaerobic digester to collectively manage animal wastes from commercial and backyard farms in the Philippines.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Community based landfill gas utilization in Brazil
Appalachian State University (ASU) located in northwestern North Carolina, is working with municipalities in the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceara. ASU’s focus is to identify landfill methane recovery project opportunities and connect these with the identified energy needs of local communities. ASU will work with Brazilian partners to develop a shortlist of landfill sites to study, develop preliminary assessments of gas generation potential, and link that potential to community energy needs. The ASU team will also conduct a study tour to North Carolina to provide Brazilian partners the chance to view landfill gas energy projects first hand.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Development and demonstration of Coal mine methane enrichment at Moonidih mine, India
This project will establish the quantity and quality of coal mine methane (CMM) in sealed off areas of one of the gassiest underground coal mines in India. The study will be carried out at Moonidih, a Degree III gassy underground mine in the Jharia coal basin.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Development of Modeling Tool for the Estimation of Methane Generation of Municipal Solid Waste Landfills in India
This project will develop an India-specific landfill gas modeling tool drawing from existing tools, but tailored to India-specific landfill conditions. The tool will be tested using actual landfill gas readings from several Indian landfills.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Development of standards and designs for anaerobic digesters and gas combustion processes
Mexico has over 100 operating anaerobic digestion systems and field experience has demonstrated varying performance. As such, the project will focus on characterizing the performance of different types of digesters and gas combustion processes. The work will contribute to development of national technical standards and improve system design and operation where warranted.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Landfill Gas Use and Training Workshops on Sanitary Landfill Operations
This grant will fund a series of three workshops in northern, central, and southern Argentina to improve operations and management of landfills. The goal will be to improve public health and safety conditions while laying the groundwork for landfill gas energy projects.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Landfill methane in China: capacity development for technology and best management practices
This project will advance the recovery and use of methane as a clean energy source from landfills in China. Through education, peer assistance, and demonstration, ICMA’s team will increase the expertise and capacity of their Chinese counterparts to implement landfill methane recovery technologies and best management practices.

This project will perform a detailed inventory of abandoned mines in the eastern piedmont of Taihang mountains coal bearing region of Shanxi and Hebei Provinces, China. The project will aim to redress the lack of knowledge of, and focus on, abandoned mines through producing a systematic inventory of abandoned mine methane emissions in the coal bearing regions of Shanxi and Hebei Provinces.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Methane Recovery in Municipal Landfills, Outreach and Experience Sharing in Mexico
Under this project, BECC will conduct a training seminar on landfill gas energy for municipalities in Mexico, provide technical support to two cities to aid them in the development and implementation of a landfill gas energy project, and undertake outreach activities to disseminate the knowledge gained from these activities to other municipalities in Mexico. In completing the seminar, BECC will partner with the International City/County Management Association (ICMA).
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Methane Recovery in the Russian Gas Sector: Capitalizing on Economic and Environmental Benefits
The main objective of this project is to establish a reliable, cost effective system for monitoring and managing the Gazprom Group’s methane emissions. This will involve conducting a pilot study on a regional scale to assess Gazprom's methane emissions, potential cost effective project opportunities, and provide recommendations for establishing a corporate methane management system. This project will also analyze advanced economic mechanisms for attracting investment for viable methane emission reduction projects.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: NARUC Regulatory Partnership to Promote Landfill gas to energy in Brazil
The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) is convening a partnership of U.S. and Brazilian regulators to create a regulatory toolkit that will foster the adoption of landfill methane recovery and use within the Brazilian waste sector. The toolkit will be developed through a participatory process that focuses on the regulatory barriers and incentives to these projects. Activities will include workshops to gather stakeholder input that leads to the development of the final toolkit.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Pilot Project Commercialization for Large and Medium -Sized Biogas Projects in Livestocks Farms
The use of anaerobic digesters at medium and large scale livestock farms in China is still in its infancy. This project aims to develop a performance assessment of the various anaerobic digester system used at these scales in China’s livestock sector. The work will contribute to expanding China’s technical standards and approach to system design and operation where warranted.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Pre-feasability study for degasification and methane capture before mining at the Pawlowice 1 coal field
This project entails a feasibility study for the cost-effective degasification and capture of methane ahead of mining activities at the Pawlowice 1 coal field in Upper Silesia, Poland. CMI is working with the AGH University, EurEnergy Resources LLC and the Pniowek mine to investigate the possibility of combining profitable CBM production with the reduction of methane emissions from coal seams during mining operations.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Pre-feasibility study of Russian landfill and gas use, barriers and commercialization
This study will focus on identifying opportunities for the cost-effective use of landfill gas as a source of electricity and on-site direct use in Russia by identifying barriers to landfill gas energy, as well as how to make such a project commercially attractive to private investors.
 
2009 EPA M2M Grant: Technical Assessment of Coal Mine Gas Recovery and Utilization in China
This project will study coal mine gas recovery and utilization technologies currently used in China, help coal mines improve their technical expertise, promote methane utilization, and decrease emissions.
 
2010 EPA M2M Grant: National Project to Remove Barriers Affecting the Implementation of Methane Recovery Projects in Landfills Located in Chile
This assistance agreement will fund work to remove barriers that affect the implementation of methane recovery projects in Chilean landfills.

14 mines are operated in the Gulaben mining area in N. China. Currently, they are being improved for the safe recovery of up to 4.5 Mt/year of coal by mid-2011. Up to 69 m3/ton of methane may be emitted from these mines. The goal of this project is to consistently produce and use high quality CMM.
